Welcome to the FG 2012 Holiday Gift Guide. With thousands of options, holiday shopping for a gent can be quite an overwhelming task. We’re here to make it easier for you. Below, you’ll find our curated picks that are sure to be a hit with the gent you’re purchasing for.

Hats
Hats are difficult to classify as in or out of style. Some people swear by them season to season, whereas others have nothing to do with them at all. With shows like Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire, we think hats are quietly coming back into style.

Fedora – Goorin Bros.

It’s been said that the Fedora hat was great in the 60s, and that it will never come back in style. Even with our conservative style leanings here at FG, we disagree with that statement. With some thoughtfulness, a Fedora will make a great addition to his wardrobe.

Filson Packer

We also recall the spirit of the 1920s and ’30s and the man in black, Johnny Cash, for our recommendation of the Packer hat. One note of caution, your gent has to have some boss in him to pull it off, a Packer means business.

Headphones

For the audiophile in your life, a great pair of headphones will make a great holiday gift. Skip the Beats by Dre kiddie headphones and go for these great selections:

In-ear

Price to performance, the Klipsch Image S4II are some of the best in-ear headphones available. They’re lightweight, feature in-line audio controls for iOS and Android, produce excellent audio quality in the high and mid-ranges, and surprisingly heavy and accurate bass.

Over-the-ear

Sennheiser HD 25-1 II

The Sennheiser HD 25-1 II are the way to go for the audiophile gent, or aspiring DJ, without breaking the bank. The audio quality from these headphones is virtually unmatched by other headphones in its price and feature -class. Sure, there are higher-end, and far more sexy over-the-ear headphone options, but the Sennheiser HD-25-1 II won’t disappoint.

Sony Alpha NEX-6 / NEX-7

Compact, lightweight, easy to travel with, manual focus and exposure controls, a built-in high resolution electronic viewfinder, an assortment of lenses for almost every type of photography, and stunning photos courtesy of an APS-C sensor typically found in DSLR class cameras, you simply can’t go wrong with the NEX-6. Step up to the NEX-7 for a 20 megapixel sensor, added manual controls and a metal body.

Apple iPad 4

We can’t conceive of any possible way that an iPad could be a bad holiday gift. Retina display makes text and images crisp, and provides more viewing real estate. For the gent on the go, get the iPad 4G spec, it will make him feel like a superhero.

Charles Tyrwhitt Shirts

We’re fans of the British blokes at Charles Tyrwhitt, who offer a great selection of quality dress shirts. If dressing well is a problem for your guy, look no further than the gents from Jermyn Street, London. You’re certain to find something that speaks to your gent’s individual style.

Apple iPhone 5

Apple’s latest iteration of the iPhone is one of our top holiday picks. It’s grown a bit taller, sports 4G LTE for fast mobile data transfer, features a faster processor, which makes running apps lighting quick, and includes an 8 megapixel camera that’s good enough to make him abandon his point and shoot.

Mercedes-Benz AMG Driving Academy

For the car or speed lover, or the gent who simply has everything and is hard to please, the Mercedes-Benz AMG Driving Academy is the ultimate gift. He’ll get to spend the day on a race course, driving over $1 million worth of Mercedes-Benz AMG vehicles. He’ll end the day a better driver, and extremely grateful for such an unforgettable experience.

See our review of the Mercedes-Benz AMG Driving Academy for more details.

Samsung Galaxy Note II

Samsung have recently released its latest version of the strangely popular phone / tablet hybrid. We’ve had some time with one, and found our experience with it worthy of a nod. It features a beautiful 5.5″ HD screen in a very slim package. For the gent who doesn’t spend a lot of time on the phone, but likes a device with a large screen, the Galaxy Note II is the way to go.

Apple iMac 2012

Apple’s redesigned iMac is simply beautiful with its super slim edges. They didn’t overlook function either in the latest iMac. It sports a reduced reflection high-definition display and some serious hardware.

Sony Alpha a99 DSLT / Nikon D600 DSLR Full-frame Cameras

2012 is the year that Full Frame photography went mainstream. Historically, full frame has been reserved for the photography elite with cameras like the Canon 5D Mark II and Nikon D3. Sony and Nikon are targeting a broader segment with very capable full-frame cameras like the Alpha a99 and D600.

There are too many specs in each of these cameras to justify reasons for you to get one. Both cameras produce stunning images, so for the gent looking for an entry-way into the arena for the elite, either camera is formidable weaponry.

Boeing 787 Dreamliner Journey

Every guy has something about him that makes him unique, so why not give him the gift of a unique experience. The Boeing Seven Eight Seven Dreamliner released in the spring of this year, with the first delivery going to Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA).

On the domestic front, United Airlines took delivery of its first Dreamliner earlier this fall. Why is that important? Because it’s not often that entirely new aircraft are built.

The Dreamliner is a long-range, mid-size wide-body, twin engine aircraft, and is the first airliner to use composites for most of its construction. It’s also fuel efficient. If you don’t find such things important, then fly the Dream because she’s simply beautiful, American made, and we are unapologetically Boeing Boys.

Plan a weekend getaway and fly United. They’re currently offering service between Houston (IAD) and their other domestic hubs: Chicago (ORD), Cleveland (CLE), Denver (DEN), Newark (EWR), San Francisco (SFO), and Washington D.C. (IAD). We’re saving our money for the Japan Airlines San Diego – Tokyo or Helsinki – Tokyo routes.

Filson Men’s Outerwear and Bags

There is no brand whose values more closely represent the spirit of FG than Filson.

  • “TOUGH, COMFORTABLE OUTDOOR CLOTHING FOR HUNTERS AND FISHERMEN, ENGINEERS AND EXPLORERS, MARINERS AND MINERS.
  • WORLDWIDE REPUTATION FOR HONESTY, QUALITY AND DURABILITY
  • WHAT WORKED THEN, STILL WORKS NOW”
Buy him a Filson, enough said.

Season Tickets to Major Sporting Events

For the sports fan, there is no better gift than season tickets to see his favorite team. Depending on your local market and team’s popularity, prices for season tickets can be highly variable and difficult to come by altogether. Purchasing them is certainly worth a try, and truly symbolize the gift that keeps on giving.

Men’s Suit & Tailoring

For the gent who doesn’t own a nice suit, time is up. It’s time for him to get handsome. Nothing makes a more powerful statement than a fine and well tailored suit. Find a reputable suit shop and take your gent to pick one out. Navy, Charcoal and Grey are always safe picks. Avoid black and brown suits, 2-for-1 deals on suits, and the cheapest suit on the rack. Don’t be afraid to spend slightly above your budget, because good suits hold up over time and offer great versatility since they can be worn for a variety of occasions.

A reputable suit shop should have an attendant, preferably male, who will first measure your gent, as well as make recommendations as to the right cut of suit for his body type. Take your attendant’s recommendations seriously, it’s his business to make his customers look good. The whole affair should be serious business for all parties involved, and highly personal. A suit resides at the pinnacle of men’s style, and no detail should be overlooked. Finding the right suit and being fitted for it can be a life changing experience for a gent.

Happy holidays to you and yours!
